Indiana Tea Rooms

Indiana, a tale of two buildings.
With the Indiana Tea Rooms hitting the news, I thought it may be a great opportunity to relate the history of the building. Despite the name 'Indiana' being associated with the beach front area for what seems like forever, it is not the original building. The Indiana was a large building on the beach near the Jetty. It was built in 1909 and operated by a Mrs Donovan. There was a huge dance floor which regularly hosted dances and fundraisers. The Indiana became the Kit Kat Caberet [sic] in January 1928 but shortly afterwards, the Council ordered the removal of all the tearooms on the beach. It was at this time the three level Centenary Bathing Pavilion was built. This building has undergone several transformations over the years resulting in the building we see today which was erected in 1996.
