Republic of Fremantle
1931, 3 Pakenham Street, Federal Stevedoring Company, ground floor let to Wm Crosby & Co.
Until recently this was used by a Commonwealth Government department. In 2021 it has been transformed into the Republic of Fremantle tavern, gin distillery and micro brewery.
The Heritage Council page merely says that this is an inter-war commercial building. It also describes it as a: 'Two-storey rendered and painted brick building with bracketed cornice on a simple parapet. The façade has two entrances and a driving entrance with Colorbond door on the right side. The windows have a keystone finish to the first floor. The ground floor has metal-framed windows, probably not original.'
During renovations the name of a previous occupant was briefly revealed above the doors: William Crosby & Co. Pty Ltd.

A PROPRIETARY COMPANY. Melbourne, Jan 13. The old firm of William Crosby and Co. has been registered as a proprietary company under the title of William Crosby and Co. Pty.. Ltd. The three partners, Messrs. Charles Crosby, William Howell Swanton, and John Franklin Crosby, are the sole shareholders and are directors of the new company. There will be no change in the conduct of the business, which will be carried out as heretofore in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Fremantle. Pty Ltd is situated at 17-19 Mouat street, Fremantle, and that such office will be open to the public between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m, on weekdays, except Saturdays, when the hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon. New Fremantle Building
Demolition of an old two-storey building in Pakenham-street, Fremantle, near Short-street, is to make room for a new brick building for the Federal Stevedoring Co. The new building should be finished within three months. It will be two-storeyed. The bottom floor will be occupied by William Crosby and Co., shipping agents, and the top floor will be let as private offices. The architects for the new building are Messrs. Owen and Nicholas, of Fremantle, and the cost of erection is £1700. The builder is Mr. C. W. Melrose. Daily News, 13 May, 1931: 4.
