Early History
The first church building in Maylands was built in 1902 by the Wesleyans – which is not surprising given that the Hardeys arrived in 1830 per Tranby, and selected what became Peninsula Farm in Maylands.
A Baptist Church was apparently built in 1904 and opened in Eighth Avenue, but it is not known where. Newspaper records also show that a building was newly in use for Baptist services in 1912 until a new church was built. The latter was opened in 1913 in Seventh Avenue.
The Anglicans were the third organisation to build a church in Maylands, the foundation stone for St Luke's being laid in 1906.
There was a Congregational Church in 1911 (and perhaps before that).
The Roman Catholic Church had been active in Maylands from the beginning, but not at first in a building constructed for the purpose.
