Maylands Methodist Church

Sixth Avenue. Opened 24 August 1902.

Heritage Council page for Maylands Primary School:
Before the construction of the Infants School on the opposite side of Sixth Avenue, across the road from the original school, Infant classes were also held in the Methodist Church Hall, also in Sixth Avenue, and in the Presbyterian Church Hall, Seventh Avenue, on the other side of Guildford Road from the Primary School, but both near the School.

There must also have been a Methodist church in Inglewood. There was in 1920 a Methodist church hall on the corner of Crawford Road and York Street (then Hay Street, and in what was then called North Maylands). So there may have been a Methodist church in Crawford Road. (Data from page for the history of the Inglewood Primary School.) (York Street is now in the suburb of Bedford.)

Western Mail, Saturday 6 September 1902: 39:
METHODIST.
A new Methodist Church, at Maylands, was opened on Sunday, August 24. The
church, which is a neat little structure of wood, was unlocked by Miss Hardey, on Sunday afternoon, in the presence of a large gathering of local residents and visitors. The service which followed was conducted by the Rev. A. J. Barclay, the superintendent of the circuit, and the evening service by Mr. Jas. Hine.

Democrat (Perth, WA : 1904 - 1905), Saturday 22 April 1905, page 4:
Maylands Methodist Church.
Special anniversary services were held in the Maylands Methodist Church on Sunday last, and on Monday night the distribution of prizes took place. Mr. Ennis, the superintendent of Brisbane Street school, presented the prizes. The children were ranged in rows above the platform, and presented a very nice picture. Under the guidance of Mr. Garland, the superintendent of the Sunday school, the scholars rendered special anthems, etc., some of the part songs being very well sung, and spoke highly of the attention and training bestowed upon them by Mr. Garland. A letter of welcome was read by one of the scholars, on behalf of the Sunday School, to the Rev. Mr. Bray. The Revs. G. James, Bray, and the superintendent having addressed the meeting, the secretary's report was read, showing that the number of children on the Sunday school roll was 120. Ten candidates had passed the school examination. The treasurer's statement of receipts and expenditure showed takings for the year £19 18s., and the expenditure £18 14a. 5d. Mrs. Osborne was presented by the Scholars with a handsome Bible, in recognition of her past services as treasurer and teacher. The Sunday school picnic will be held on Monday next. The church has now been in existence two years and a half, and the stewards find it almost too small for the requirements of the district. National Library of Australia
