Sharpe's Penny Pictures

William George Sharpe was born in West Melbourne on 20.12.1889 and moved with his family to Fremantle in 1893. He was educated at South Terrace Primary and Fremantle Boys Schools. He married Beatrice Amy Matthews in 1919 and they had three children. The Sharpes ran a grocery business at 189 Holland Street (now 114) from 1919 until 1950. SHARPE’S PENNY PICTURES, Holland St, Fremantle East
George Sharpe began a penny picture show in the backyard of his shop in January 1930. Attendance grew from 70 at the first show to as many as 250 for a Chaplin movie. The fire brigade forced the closure of the show as a fire hazard in 1933.
