CLUBS WA AWARDS 2014

The Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Club was awarded a certificate for reaching its centenary. >

A Fremantle Herald story by Brendan Foster called Up the Workers was a finalist for the Best Club Media Story.

A shorter version of the following poem by Tom Davis was a finalist in the Members' Choice Award, 2014. (There is a word limit on entries.)

THE FREMANTLE WORKERS CLUB
Tom Davis

Preceding the FIRST WORLD WAR
And just like a cricket score
Its century is passed
one hundred years at last
on the same month and day
as it was Founding Day
OUR Workers Club
became a club
we celebrate
though some will state
we nearly didn't make it
only devoted effort
gave the Club we have today
that is growing everyday.

The grounding years were tilled
and much has been fulfilled
producing the good
as a good Club should
keeping members happy
just as they must be.
Survival is ALL
of the members call.
The Club has to hear
of the changes near
historically.
Flexibility
is the KEY TO SUCCESS
A CENTURY NO LESS
very few of its peers
will go anywhere near!
So CONGRATULATIONS
and all tribulations
are cast to the past
ONE HUNDRED AT LAST!
Three cheers for Sunday
with hope for the day
ANOTHER MILESTONE
IS WRITTEN IN STONE!

Clubs WA winnerMEMBERS CHOICE CLUB OF THE YEAR 2013

In 2013, the Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Club won this award at the ClubsWA Awards Ceremony, at The Astral, Crown, Sunday 14 April 2013.

The Club was also among the finalists in another three categories:

Volunteer Club Legend (Don Whittington)

Best Club TAB

Best Club Media Story—two entries:

One is Ron Davidson's story 'Up and Away' in the Fremantle Herald of 28 January 2013, which may be read on a History page. The other is Jenny D'Anger's restaurant review, 'Workers' keeps it real', also in the Herald; it's on the Food page.

Penny Stonestreet's poem won the Members Choice Award for the Most Creative Entry.

The Fremantle Workers club you see,
Is a pearl in our community,
A hive of great activity!
Providing opportunity
To dance and let your spirit free!
A magnet of great energy,
Without this club where would we be?
I think the members would agree,
It's an extension of our family!

The photo shows her receiving her award from Don Whittington, as she couldn't be at the Awards ceremony. Click on the photo for a larger version.

And here's a poem by Ross Annear entered in the same category:

Has any Club bounced back
from the "Shut Down" sack?
8 months closed
most supposed
gone for evermore,
NOW, AN OPEN DOOR
a social hub
I'll give you the rub
is needed
so succeeded.
ENTERTAINMENT GALORE
improvements are in store.
THE NEW WORKERS' CLUB
much more than a pub!
