“Timber, Johns’ and Sing-A-Longs” - the origins of the Sicilian Fishermen of Fremantle.
You might remember James Paratore from our 2022 Fremantle Studies Day where he presented an excellent paper on WA fishers lost at sea.
James will explore the origins of the Sicilian Fishing Community from their original camp at Point Peron to their eventual home in Fremantle. The ways in which these pioneering families shaped the Fishing Industry have left a lasting legacy on the Fremantle cultural fabric, the built environment and beyond.
A 5th generation Fisherman, James continues to work with his Father Joe - now in his 56th fishing season, onboard their vessel, the Vanessa James. Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour remains their home. James also holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy, a Master of Public Health, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. He has held previous positions on the Western Rock Lobster Council, the WA Fishing Industry Council, and is the current President of the local Professional Fishermen's Association - the WA Rock Lobster Fishers' Federation.
