George Clifton

George Clifton (1823-1913) was the sixth son of Marshall Waller Clifton and his wife Elinor (née BELL). In 1841 Marshall Clifton was Chief Commissioner for the settlement at Australind. Some of his children came with him, but George was already in the Royal Navy, in which he had enrolled as a cadet aged 14. He was injured in the Syrian War at 19, invalided home to England, and discharged in 1842. He came to the Swan River Colony in 1843 per Madras. In Perth in 1853 he married Eliza Naylor Roe (1834-1925), the third daughter of John Septimus Roe and his wife Matilda, who bore fourteen children.
He was appointed superintendent of the Water Police in January 1851, and carried out his duties in that post with 'zeal' (as official records said more than once) for thirteen years, until he was granted leave of absence in January 1864.
Returning to England, he became the Assistant and then Governor of Portland Prison and Dartmoor, in which capacity he continued for nineteen years, and was seen a reformer of the penitentiary system.
