Coral Browne

A Coral Browne scrapbook. The core of it is the photos that Coral and her mother sent to my grandmother, so it's a family album: she was my second cousin. For Coral's life story, see the standard biography by Rose Collis.

Coral's grandfather, William Bennett, born 24 March 1869, Scotchmans, Victoria, was an older brother of my grandmother, Christina (Bennett) Robertson, born 2 February 1880, also at Scotchmans (near Ballarat). William Bennett's daughter Victoria married Leslie Clarence Brown, who died 13 October 1957: Coral was their only child. Christina Bennett's daughter Mary Linda married David Gillard: I was their only child. We are of the same generation though I was born thirty years later than she. I visited Vicky in London in 1968. I saw Coral in Joe Orton's What the Butler Saw in London in 1969, but never met her.

The photo above of Coral on stairs is stamped on the back as being from the studio of Angus McBean, 53 Endell St WC2, phone Temple Bar 1015.
