ELIOT, George, b. 20.11.1816, d. 16.10.1895, son of (Rev) Laurence William & Matilda Elizabeth (nee Halsey), arr. 1.6.1829 per Parmelia (said to have family connections with Gov. Stirling & accompanied him on his visit to England 1832-4), m. 1.6.1842 (Australind) Louisa CLIFTON b. 1814 d. 13.10.1880, dtr. of Marshall WaIler & Elinor (nee Bell). Chd. Premature twins d. 1842, Elinor Maude Catherine b. 1844 d. 1915, Laurence Stirling b. 1845 d. 1922, Anna b. 1847 d. 1940, Mary Gertrude b. 1848 d. 1933, Geoffrey b. 1850 d. 1902, John Raymond b. 1853 d. 1929, William Pearce b. 1855 d. 1911, Priscilla Richenda b. 1856 d. 1940. Selected 2560 acres Plantagenet district & bt. 4000ac in Avon. Accompanied Stirling on his overland expedition to Albany 1835. Listed in 1837 Census as owning a farm. At an early age held civil appointments, Clerk to Stirling & visited England again 1839-1840. Lived at Bunbury where he was Resident Magistrate with his home at "Bury Hill". Transferred to Geraldton in 1870 "a very dreary town, no trees. no flowers, no society, all sand & bottles," according to Prinsep 12.1871. Served also at Albany. Church services at Bunbury were conducted at "Bury Hill" until the church was built in 1842. C/E.

Statham spells the name Elliot. George Elliot was 'the recently orphaned nephew by marriage of James' sister Mary Halsey, who had been engaged as a junior clerk.'
