George Embleton

EMBLETON, George (John), b. 1798, arr. 19.10.1829 per Atwick with wife Dorothy (nee Clerk) b. 1798/1802 d. 1846 (Perth) & son Robert b. 1826, educ. at Perth School. Chd. 2 others (b. ?W.A). Servants to Whately. Recommended as gaoler for Fremantle. By 1835 owned a Perth Town Lot & building taking lodgers. Leased a big room as a hospital to Dr. Collie. Ran "Commercial Hotel" 1844. Mrs Embleton arr. 17.3.1841 per Sterling from London & a son dep. 24.2.1844 per Shepherd for England. Leased the hotel in 1847 & in 1848 & 1850 held sandalwood cutter's licence.
George Embleton was already running something like a boarding-house in Perth (site yet to be identified) when he proposed the formation of the Union Club in 1834. It seems that it might have been a way to be able to sell alcoholic beverages without a publican's licence. There were complaints of various kinds about it, but it survived until nearly the end of 1842.
