Stirling also had two passengers [on the Success], for Governor Darling wanted skilled observers to accompany the expedition. First was the New South Wales Colonial Botanist, Charles Frazer, and second, the highly regarded landscape artist Frederick Garling. Both men boarded the Success at Point Piper on 15 January 1827.
... The artist Frederick Garling had arrived in Sydney with his parents in 1815. Far less is known of his background, but Garling was a self-taught and quick painter, working mostly in watercolour and rarely signing his pictures. He was called Sydney's ‘first marine artist’, as he painted almost every ship that entered Port Jackson in the 1820s, mostly with landscape backgrounds. His ability to sketch and paint realistic representations made him admirably suited for the Swan River expedition.
