Joseph Keane Hitchcock
J.K. Hitchcock was, in Bob Reece's phrase, 'Fremantle's first historian'. He was born in Guildford (WA) in 1855 and died in 1929, in North Fremantle, just three months after his History was published. The complete text is available on this site.
In 1919, Hitchcock wrote a series of twelve articles (see below) on the 'Early Days' of Fremantle, specifically as @ 1869, the year after the first one in which the author saw Fremantle for the first time - and fifty years before the publication of the articles. He resumed the series for half a dozen more articles in 1921. These articles served as a rehearsal for the main event: the publication of Hitchcock's major History in 1929. Some whole sentences in the earlier publications reappear in the book.
Hitchcock:
In 1842 the sailing vessel Simon Taylor arrived from London with 219 immigrants. Among the arrivals on that vessel were four families from one small village in Berkshire. They were Samuel Caporn, his wife and nine children; a family named White, who settled on the Canning and their descendants are now spread over the whole State, and the Hitchcocks, ancestors of the writer of this history.
