Oliver Lodge
Lodge may have been the most ambitious hotelier in early Fremantle. He built his Castle Hotel in Henry Street, possibly the first three-storey building in the state. Along with Manning's 'folly' it stands out in early photos of the town. But it may have been before its time, as it wasn't long before Lodge had to sell it.
LODGE, Oliver. b. 1820, d. 5.8.1865 (Frem), m. 14.6.1848 Mary Ann BATEMAN b. 16.4.1830, dtr. of John & Mary Ann. Chd. Helen b. 1848, Emma b. 1850 d. 1850, Kate Eliza b. 1851, Mary Alice b. 1853 d. 1854, Lilian Louise Marina b. 1866. (To England per Trusty 1843). Clerk & Innkeeper. Took over "Crown & Thistle" 1848. Agent for Inquirer 1850. To Fremantle Propr. of "Castle Hotel" in Henry St. 1854-62. Bt. Town Lots 1850 & 1851. Qualified as a juror 1860 with £1500 personal estate. His widow & 2 chd. visited London, dep. 18.1.1866 per Fitzroy. Mrs Lodge employed a T/L man at Swan 1869. Of the 3 surviving dtrs, 2 lived at Frem in house provided by uncle John Bateman.
