Ellen Mangles Stirling
Ellen Mangles was the daughter of James Mangles MP and Mary (nee Hughes). She was born 3 September 1807 at Woodbridge House, Surrey and baptized 12 October 1807 at the church of St John the Evangelist, Stoke, nr Guildford, Surrey.
Her siblings were Frederick Mangles, Charles Edward Mangles, Ross Donnelly Mangles MP, Robert Mangles, Jane Mangles, Henry John Mangles, Albert Mangles and Hamilla Mary (Mangles) Preston.
She married James Stirling 3 September 1823 (on her 16th birthday) in the church of St John the Evangelist, Stoke, nr Guildford, Surrey.
They had eleven children: Andrew Frederick (1824-1874), Frederick Henry (1829-1885), Mary (1832-1906), William, Charles Edward (1834-?), Agnes (1835-1853), Walter Albert (1837-1875, killed Cawnpore in Indian mutiny), Ellinor (1840-1911, m. Arbuthnot), Anna Hamilton (1840-1899), Dorothea (1842-1910), Georgina Janet (1845-1910).
She would have 'laid the foundation stone' of Perth (by 'cutting down' a tree) on 12 August 1829, but she was unwell (Statham-Drew suggests diarrhoea) and Helen Dance (wife of Charles, captain of the Sulphur) was the only lady in the colony available.
She died 8 June 1874 in Albert Mansions, Victoria Street, London (or Portland Place London), aged 66 and was buried in June 1874 in the churchyard of Stoke Church, next to the husband she had married there >50 years earlier.
One of her cousins was botanist James Mangles FRS. He visited her in 1831.
Ellen Street in Fremantle is named for her, as was Ellen Brook in Upper Swan, and, from that, in modern times, the suburb of Ellenbrook.
