James Stokes
James Stokes (1810-1861) arrived on the James Pattison in 1834. He seems (from Erickson) to have gone back to England in 1857 perhaps to fetch a wife, Julia, who unfortunately died the next year, 1858, in giving birth to another Julia.
It's likely that in 1837 he established the first brewery in Perth (there may have been an earlier one in Guildford): the Albion Brewery, at the foot of Spring Street. It was later called the Stanley Brewery, and was on the site of the last brewery there, the Emu Brewery.

STOKES, James, b. 1810, d. 3.1.1861 (Perth), arr. 19.8.1834 (Frem) per James Pattison, & returned to Eng. to [marry?] 3.9.1857 Julia Maria STOKES b. 1830 d. 17.6.1858 (Perth) youngest dtr. of Richard of "Ashton Lodge" Bedminster, Bristol, she died in childbirth soon after arrival with husband in WA 17.2.1858 per Spartan. Chd. Julia Maria b. 1858. Propr. of Stanley Brewery, Perth. His foreman was William Meloy. He owned 2 lots of land (200ac & 10ac) South of Monger's Lake, which were inherited by his infant dtr. Executors Meloy & Saw received one quarter of the profits, and were to see that the child received the best education in the colony.
