HMS Challenger

HMS Challenger was the ship in which Captain (later Admiral) Charles Fremantle arrived in 1829 to claim the western part of what was then known as New Holland (that is, Australia) for the British Crown.

Hitchcock:
As is generally known, Fremantle derived its name from Captain Charles H. Fremantle, of H.M.S. Challenger, which anchored off Garden Island on April 25, 1829, three [two] years after Major Lockyer had founded the settlement at Albany. Captain Fremantle landed on Arthur’s Head, and on May 2 took formal possession in the name of His Majesty King George IV. Hitchcock: 9.

Among the crew on Challenger in 1829 were the three lieutenants Mouat, Henry and Pakenham, after whom are named three streets in the West End of Fremantle. Lieutenant George Dashwood was also aboard, but apparently did not rate a street in Roe's estimation.
